The Governing Body

School Governance

In all schools, the Headteacher is responsible for the day-to-day running and management of the school. However Governing Bodies are the strategic leaders of our schools and have a vital role to play in making sure every child receives the best possible education. The purpose of maintained schools governing bodies is to 'conduct the school with a view to promoting high standards of educational achievement at the school'.

In all types of schools, governing bodies should have strong focus on three core strategic functions:

  1. Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction;
  2. Holding the Headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils;
  3. Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent.

Like everyone else, school governors have become more accountable in the last few years. The Governing Body has a role as a critical friend to ensure standards continually improve across the school for every child.They need to look closely at the curriculum, finance, buildings, staffing as well as being responsible for reviewing the policies and procedures in place at the school.

The Governing Body is drawn from many aspects of the community. At our school there are 4 types of governor:

  • Local Authority Governor - governors appointed by the Local Authority
  • Parent Governor - governors with children in education elected by parents of children at the school
  • Staff Governor - governors representing the staff at the school. The Headteacher is also a member of the Governing Body
  • Co-Opted Governor - governors with particular skills or knowledge invited to join the Governing Body.

The Full Governing Body meets once a term. There are also two sub-committees, Committee One and Committee Two, which meet termly or as necessary.
